The Challenge
The Federation of Civil Resistance Organizations of Gao (F.O.R.C-G) is an organization of all ages, all socio-professional strata, and the women and men of the Gao region. It brings together all three civil resistance movements, which emerged during the terrorist occupation of 2012 (Les Patrouilleurs – Les Jeunes Patriotes – Nous Pas Bouger) and associations. Their objectives, at the time, were to secure the city of Gao, which was abandoned to itself; to prevent the population from fleeing, and to organize resistance to the occupation until the return of the State. They made a commitment, at the same time, to work after the return of the State, so that young people would have jobs. United by a common culture, a common history, and a desire to live together, the F.O.R.C-G has succeeded in uniting movements that did not previously collaborate to face common enemies.
The challenge was filming and doing interviews in Gao, a city that city bore the scars of the attacks and that still lived in fear. It was extremely sensitive (and dangerous) to walk around with a camera and ask these hard questions.
The Process
- Define the parameters of the mission in Mali
- Write the script
- in Gao, shoot the interviews, b-roll and photographs
- Back to Dakar, edit the video with voice over and animation
- Publish on Youtube and other platform
Outcome
The film was presented to the public in Mali and received a very warm welcome. It’s said to have captured really well the events and feelings of all the people involved, while still left with a note of hope.
